After-School Enrichment
At George Peabody we offer an array of exciting after-school electives. The course offerings are based on parental input. Every semester new classes are added to meet the needs of our school community!
The George Peabody Parent Teacher Association sponsors our after-school elective program and provides funding to subsidize the cost of running the courses. Scholarships are provided in order to provide all students the opportunity to participate in our after school electives.

Puppet Theatre

All the world’s a stage, and you can help put on the show! Create miniature puppet theatres and masks using 2- and 3-dimensional media. For children in elementary school who are ready to delve deeper into artistic techniques, classes for this age group may focus on a particular medium or theme, but students make their own choices about the content and complexity of their work. As well as promoting artistic development, these classes enhance the development of perceptual skills, creative problem solving, critical thinking and visual language skills.
Hip Hop Dance

Funk Beyond Control (FBC) is an award-winning hip hop dance group from San Francisco, California. Founded in 2005 by choreographer Darnell Carroll. Darnell Carroll has been dancing and teaching for over 20 years all over the bay area. Along side Mr. Carroll he has 2 co-directors, Mario Ponce and BJ Norris, who have also taught in several dance studios, after school and school programs around the bay.
The dance company is made up of a diverse group of young dancers. FBC has mastered a unique performance style blending street, funk and high-energy hip hop. Theirpassion and dedication is proven every time they hit the stage. FBC has held many titles in national competitions including U.S. Hip Hop International, World of Dance and BattleFest 360. They perform at high profile events such as San Francisco Hip Hop Festival and many community events up and down the West Coast.
Destination Science
The Destination Science program is developed by their professional curriculum design team. Their activities are based on critical science concepts as defined by the National Science Standards. Their design team combs the globe, to find the most “surprising” child-friendly materials to bring the science concepts to life. With open eyes and open minds campers increase their confidence as they “work like scientists” through experimental design processes, balancing cooperative teamwork with their own unique creativity. Additionally, the art of thinking outside the box is rewarded daily during afternoon Creativity Challenges. Destination Science is committed to reinforcing the 6 pillars of Character Development; trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, & citizenship (TRRFCC). This distinct combination of scientific concepts, experimental processes, surprising materials, creativity an character education is their recipe for fun.
Digital Photography

By using a digital camera as a tool for looking, they will use a combination of media that will strengthen each child’s photographic point of view. Through a series of projects, students will develop an awareness of framing through the lens and will learn about lighting, scale, storytelling and portraiture. They will provide a laptop and portable printer to view and print children’s photographs on-site. Students will re-visit their printed photos with a variety of art materials to explore the many ways in which one can alter, edit, or change an image. By the end of the session, projects will be compiled into book, notecard, or portfolio form.
Handcrafts: Fiber Art & Crafts

Ever wonder how your sweaters are made? Learn about the ancient art of turning fiber into cloth and knit apparel. Students will learn to spin yarn, dye fibers, knit, weave and felt with natural fibers. This fun, educational craft workshops will be taught by Jamie and Blas,
the owners of local fiber arts store, Urban Fauna Studio. No previous experience required to participate in this workshop series.
Urban Fauna. has a passion for seeking creativity in people and enjoys sharing a love of fiber and handcrafts. With of 10+ years experience in education, this class will explore yarn making, knitting, crocheting, finger knitting, and many other fiber crafts and projects.
Engineering FUNdamentals: Legos
by Play-Well
Grades: 1 – 5
Do you like building things? Design and build motorized machines, catapults, pyramids, demolition derby cards, buildings and other constructions out of LEGO® bricks. While exploring engineering, architecture and physics, students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Returning students are given new projects that build on previous projects and concepts.
Yoga
Grades 2-5
Practicing Yoga poses help children build strength and coordination, while creating new awareness about their growing bodies. An introduction to meditation and mindfulness deepens the mind-body connection, and is part of this one-hour class. For older students, we will move into more advanced flowing sequences, balancing poses, breathing exercises, and simple relaxation techniques, as well as partner poses and fun yoga activities that build trust and positive communication. Class size limited to 10 students.
Yoga
Grades K-1
Practicing Yoga poses help children build strength and coordination, while creating new awareness about their growing bodies. An introduction to meditation and mindfulness deepens the mind-body connection, and is part of this one-hour class.For younger students the class also includes storytelling, singing and creative movement. These Yoga practices stimulate the children’s imaginations and create enlivening experiences that will enhance their health, communication and learning.
Mother and teacher Erika Lam has been practicing Yoga for over 15 years. Teaching Yoga has naturally spilled over into parenting her two children, ages 9 and 6, and she is passionate about empowering all kids to make healthful choices for themselves by introducing them to Yoga. This will be Erika’s third year teaching this course at Peabody. Class size limited to 10 students.
Piano
by Keyboard Educators
Grades K-5
This course is run by Keyboard Educators of San Francisco. The one-hour per week class meets for ten weeks. The course is geared for beginners through intermediate. All materials and supplies are furnished. One piano is shared by all class participants. Please call 665-2290 with any questions about this class. This is a non-PTA sponsored class.
Spanish Language Instruction

Grades 1-3
Early elementary students learn their new languages through adventures, activities that require increasing levels of engagement and understanding over time, and that reward kids with a feeling of accomplishment. A simple literacy component ensures that these students not only listen, speak, sing and play in their new language, but read and write as well. Lango is proud to partner with over twenty elementary schools providing classes to their students.
When a child takes a Lango class, she doesn’t just learn a language lesson; she reads from a storybook containing material from that lesson, and listens to music specially designed to reinforce the day’s learning, and plays with memory/flashcards that challenge her to retain what she’s learned in a fun, age-appropriate way. Class size limited to 12 students.
Art: Modern Art
Grades K-2
Students learn about artists who use abstraction to emphasize the importance of feelings and ideas, rather than trying to capture a realistic scene. In this program, students create drawings of abstract animals, wire sculptures of action figures, and stencils of organic shapes. They explore Salvador Dali’s transformations of realistic figures, Charles Demuth’s precisionist style, and Georgia O’Keefe and Helen Frankenthaler’s abstract color studies. Other projects give students a chance to abstract a face as they create a Pablo Picasso-style portrait, sculpt a clay figure inspired by Auguste Rodin, and paint a historical mural on Mission life in the style of Diego Rivera.
Chinese Lion Dancing

Grades K-5*
This course will introduce your child to the physical, cultural & traditional aspects of Chinese Lion Dancing. Students will learn the techniques & etiquette of traditional Chinese Lion Dancing including the most popular moves for “walking,” “jumping,” “bowing” and more. Students will also learn the music for the accompanying drum, gong, and cymbal.
Through Lion Dancing, students will develop their strength, coordination plus overall health and fitness. And since Chinese Lion Dancing is a part of the art of Kung Fu, your child will also learn the traditions of respect, kindness and discipline as they build their confidence and self-esteem. Have fun, get fit and learn the art of Lion Dancing as we prepare for a Chinese New Year Performance! A parent or instructor will lead children to and from Tat Wong Kung Fu located at the corner of 7th & Clement.

Co-Ed Sport Club
Grades 1-2 & 3-5
Our Sports4Kids coach, Coach Mary, will lead the sports club. Sign up for one day or two! The class will focus on having fun, playing a variety of team sports and teaching the fundamentals of personal fitness.
Basketball Club
Grades 3-5
Sports4Kids coach, Coach Mary, will lead this class. The class will focus on having fun, teaching students the skills necessary to play basketball and of course lots of games.
Drama

The New Conservatory Theatre Center will again be offering affordable AFTER-SCHOOL DRAMA CLASSES at Peabody! As part of our on-going commitment to bringing enrichment programs to our students, we are pleased to bring back NCTC’s popular drama program. Students will learn a variety of acting skills including IMPROVISATION & THEATRE GAMES, which are proven to encourage self-esteem, team building and creativity. We focus on building the skills that your child will need to be a happy, successful, outgoing participant in life. Their enthusiastic, qualified teachers are what make each class truly special. Returning NCTC Instructor, Amelia Mulkey, specializes in educational theatre and is thrilled to be working with your kids again! Act now! Class size limited to 15 students.
Chess Class

This will be our sixth year working with instructors from Academic Chess. Class participants will experience the innovative teaching methods of Academic Chess. This class is designed for everyone from beginner to the advanced player. Attendees will learn the basic principles behind the opening game, middle game tactics/objectives, and endgame strategies. Learning this ancient game, participants will develop patience, foster critical thinking skills, and understand the connection between decisions and consequences. The one-hour class is broken into half hour instruction on a 2-dimensional demonstration board, followed by a half hour of supervised playtime. Class size limited to 30 students.
Tree Frog Treks: Investigation and Exploration
Grades K-2
Join the Tree Frog Treks team of scientists and animal ambassadors as we take an incredible journey of Investigation and Exploration! We’ll follow in the footsteps of the great minds of physics and chemistry, and make amazing discoveries about the world we live in! We will don our goggles and lab coats to experiment with gravity, centrifugal force, pressure and temperature, and make bubbling lava lamps, slime, and hydrogen soap bubbles that explode into orange flames! Learn about atoms and molecules, mix acids and bases, and create exothermic and endothermic reactions that can power a rocket!
In the second part of the semester, we’ll explore the natural world and learn how to make fire without matches, purify water, and build our own shelters! We will learn to recognize and prepare edible plants, track and stalk wild animals, and make rope and baskets out of plants that grow in your neighborhood park. Each class will start with a team challenge that will prepare you to work together in difficult conditions. Learn by doing as you Investigate and Explore with Tree Frog Treks!
