After-School Enrichment
At George Peabody we offer an array of exciting after-school electives. The course offerings are based on parental input. Every semester new classes are added to meet the needs of our school community!
The George Peabody Parent Teacher Association sponsors our after-school elective program and provides funding to subsidize the cost of running the courses. Scholarships are provided in order to provide all students the opportunity to participate in our after school electives. [updated 8/08].

George Peabody Enrichment Program Course Descriptions
Chess Class (Grades K-5)
This will be our fourth year working with instructors from Academic Chess. Class participants will experience the innovative teaching methods of Academic Chess. This class is designed for everyone from beginner to the advanced player. Attendees will learn the basic principles behind the opening game, middle game tactics/objectives, and endgame strategies. Learning this ancient game, participants will develop patience, foster critical thinking skills, and understand the connection between decisions and consequences. The one-hour class is broken into half hour instruction on a 2- dimensional demonstration board, followed by a half hour of supervised playtime.
Art Class (Grades K & 1 and 2-5)
This year we have contracted with the San Francisco Arts Education to provide our after school art teacher. SF ArtsEd is distinguished by its wide array of arts experiences that ignite and educate the imagination. SF ArtsEd believes that the investigation of the arts enriches the lives of young people as it promotes personal growth and a commitment to life-long learning. The skills that SF ArtsEd encourages are invaluable tools for citizens of this new century in all walks of life. Anne Garvey will instruct both classes this semester.
Yoga/Movement (Grades K-2)
Erika Lam is a Holistic Health Practitioner who has been studying Yoga for 15 years. Teaching Yoga has naturally spilled over into parenting her two children, age 7 and 4, whom she practices Yoga with at home. She has witnessed numerous benefits of Yoga in her children’s lives that range from building self-esteem to having more restful sleep. This will be Erika’s second semester teaching this course at Peabody.
Practicing Yoga poses help children build strength and coordination, while creating new awareness about their growing bodies. This one-hour class includes storytelling, singing and dialogue to stimulate the children’s imaginations and to create enlivening movement experiences that will enhance their health, communication and learning.
Music (Grades K-2)
This class is based on Orff Schulwerk, an approach to music education which actively involves children in music, using games, dance, and drama as well as musical performance. The children in this class will sing, dance and play games with music. Curriculum will include musical concepts such as rhythm, beat, pitch, and form; some music reading and writing; appreciation of classical and world music; and science concepts involving the relationship between vibration and sound.
Margaret Thrupp, B.Mus., M.A. (Elementary Education.) has taught flute, recorder, and classroom music both here and in Australia. Currently she is employed as a preschool teacher in the Sunset, as a flute teacher, and as a professional flautist. Previously, she has played in the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and has appeared as a soloist at Carnegie Hall.
Chorus and Recorder (Grades 3-5)
This class is based on Orff Schulwerk, an approach to music education which actively involves children in music, using games, dance, and drama as well as musical performance. The instructors will pick students up at George Peabody at 2:40 and walk them to Mountain Lake Park. The Outdoor Club provides an opportunity for classic, unstructured free play in a gorgeous outdoor setting. They make sure every day includes something for everyone– from traditional competitive sports to creative cooperative games to relaxed nature hikes.
