Kaboom! A new playground is planned

KaBOOM! Have You Heard the Great News?
— submitted by Nettie Atkisson

Many of you have heard the good news about our new playground. George Peabody Elementary School was awarded one of only 17 playgrounds nationwide from a partnership of the National Football League (NFL), Home Depot, and KaBOOM. KaBOOM is a national non-profit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.

On Tuesday, November 11, over 200 volunteers (Home Depot employees, parents, and community members) will come together to build our new structure in ONE DAY! We will have music, food, activities for children and a whole lot of hard work and sweat. Since November 11 is Veteran’s Day, the children will be preparing care packages for men and women serving in the Military. We are also thrilled to announce that we will be improving upon the green spaces on our campus by building a new garden space. Also in the plans are new picnic tables and benches to be enjoyed by our students and the greater Peabody Community.

We could not have been able to get the new playground without the help from our donors, parents, school staff, and the community. We are still trying to raise funds to match the NFL’s $40,000; we only need $7,500 more to go. The children are participating in a coin drive fundraiser, and the adults are approaching corporations and individuals. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation for the project, please send a check to George Peabody PTA, 251 Sixth Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94118, attn: ‘KaBOOM.’  For more information, contact Nettie at (415) 567-8976.

Thanks to all who have come together to make this happen. We are enjoying this new adventure!
